The Pebble by Your Door: a novel by Dean Sorenmann

Introduction

In the echoes of human tradition lies a phrase that resonates deeply: 'As the heart's cry!' This phrase encapsulates the essence of our creation, hinting at Prometheus leaning over a clay-rich shore, infusing Pandora with an undying flame. This act, this spark of life, granted humanity the blueprint to eternal life, a treasure coveted by gods and mortals alike, that is, if the promise of eternity continues to shine.

Since the moment Prometheus's full lips pressed into the mud and his breath filled her lungs for the first time, humanity has pursued our birthright, while the gods have sought to obstruct our path. If you look within your heart, as I have, you may see Prometheus kneeling in the mud, his sandaled toes imprinting the earth, one hand cupping her barely formed head, the other embracing her chest. Delve deeper, and what do you find? The gods see a mere breath, but surely, we all know it was more than that. It was a kiss, a fact they cannot deny if confronted. So, why have we not asked the gods what truly transpired on the shores of the river Peneus?

As the messenger god Hermes is my witness, this story relates to what happened before and after that divine deed.
